“This sucks,” Howard said, trying to fit his enormous belly under the barbed wire fence. “It has to be better over there.” Trying to slide on his back, he tangled his camouflage shirt in the barbed wire near his belly button region. “Help me, damn it.”

“I don’t know, Howie,” Tadd said, putting down his deer rifle and a bottle of Jack Daniels. “We aren’t supposed to leave the park property. Ranger Jack said so.” Tadd pulled Howard’s shirt loose and held down the rest of his friend’s enormous belly until it was clear of the spiked wire.

“Screw Ranger Jack,” Howard said, rolling over and getting up on the other side of the fence. “He’s nothing but an overgrown cub scout leader. And to hell with Big Bear. I paid to hunt animals. This place is a scam. We haven’t seen nothing for three days. No animals anywhere, and I’m sick of shooting ant piles. It ain’t fun anymore. Hand the equipment over.”

“I don’t know, Howie,” Tadd said while handing over the backpacks, the half-empty bottles of Jack Daniels, then both deer rifles. “This isn’t park property. We’re gonna get in trouble. We’re only allowed to hunt and camp on Big Bear Property.”

“I know that, dingle-berry!” Howard said, putting on his backpack again. “But there ain’t nothing in there. We only got five vacation days left. It’s time for action, Tadd. You know, like on TV. Trackers and shit.”

“I’m not a tracker,” Tadd said, easily stepping between the barbed wire with his tiny frame. “We’re insurance salesmen. Hell, we aren’t even good hunters. I only shot one of the millions of ant piles I aimed at.”

“Shooting big animals ain’t as difficult as shooting ants,” Howard said, taking a swig of bourbon. “Not only do they not move as fast, but they’re also bigger. We’re shooting fine. What we need to do is find some wild game. Doesn’t this look like the place?”

“I don’t know, Howie,” Tadd said, surveying the new terrain. The washed-out blue Texas sky and burning sun still above, the desert floor surrounded by mountains as far as the eye could see, and the landscape splashed with a myriad of colors, from pink to mahogany to dusty yellow. Just as beautiful as Big Bear, but a little more mysterious and unknown. Unbound. It does look better for hunting maybe. “It’s somebody else’s land. We’re gonna get in trouble. And Charlotte won’t be happy.”

“Screw your wife! No offense intended, but she’s still got you by the balls. Here we are on vacation, and she’s still making decisions for you. Come on, Tadd, stop that altar boy crap and let’s shoot something.”

“Okay,” Tadd said, strapping on his backpack and following Howard.

Tadd knew he wouldn’t like this vacation. But, as usual, Howard talked him into it. A hunting trip, something neither one of them had ever done in their thirty-four years of life. In mysterious West Texas no less, far from their homes in Slidell, Louisiana.

Howard had read about Big Bear Parks
